Further education and training

Students have many options to engage in further education and training.

Students and parents and carers can discuss further education and training interests, choices and options with their school learning and support team.

Apprenticeship or traineeship

Australian apprenticeships and traineeships combine work with training and provide a nationally recognised qualification.

Apprenticeships last for three or four years and are usually offered in the traditional trade industries such as plumbing, carpentry, building, electrical and hairdressing.

Traineeships last for one or two years and are mostly specific to non-trade areas such as hospitality, information technology, business administration, sport and recreation and retail.

Support is available for people with disability and may include tutorial support, interpreting, mentoring and workplace modifications.

University

Universities provide support services to students with disability.

The support services may include planning for assessment adjustments, exam provisions, equipment and assistive technology provision, liaison and advice and advocacy, among other services. University disability advisors are available to meet prospective students to answer questions about inclusion and accessibility, to help plan for their studies.

High school students with disability including mental illness, medical conditions and learning disabilities should contact disability advisers at the universities they are considering.

Even if they are unsure of their university destination, making contact can enable students to find out how the system works at university – in case they do need help or adjustments.

TAFE

TAFE NSW employs teachers/consultants to support students with disability. These specialist staff ensure students with disability have equal access to training.
