Technology Mandatory Syllabus - Introduction and other resources
Crack the Code: Technology Mandatory Years 7–8 2017
Crack the Code is a unit of work that develops knowledge, skills and understanding of coding. It addresses 25 hours of the Digital Technologies context in the new Technology Mandatory syllabus. These resources have been developed to meet the requirements of the new Technology Mandatory syllabus and can be used with Year 7 from 2019 and Year 8 from 2020.
Electric Vehicles – The Dragster: Technology Mandatory Years 7–8 2017
The Dragster program has been designed to address the Engineered Systems context of the Technology Mandatory syllabus. It provides an introduction to electro-mechanical devices. Students design, produce and evaluate an electric vehicle and compete against their peers in a drag race. This requires students to investigate the effects of gearing on speed and acceleration and to consider these factors in their vehicle design. Sample STL files for 3D printing an engine mount are included.
Farm Fibres to Felt: Technology Mandatory Years 7–8 2017
Farm Fibres to Felt focuses on textiles in the Materials Technology context and includes agriculture content from the Agriculture and Food Technologies context. Students develop knowledge and understanding of agriculturally produced wool fibres and design, produce and evaluate a hand felted product.
Fast and Curious: Technology Mandatory Years 7–8 2017
Fast and Curious is a unit of work that develops knowledge, skills and understanding of data, digital systems and IoT (Internet of Things). The unit fits within the Digital Technologies context of the new Technology Mandatory syllabus that is to be implemented from 2019 and uses the Anki Overdrive race cars. It addresses 25 hours of the Digital Technologies context in the new Technology Mandatory syllabus. These resources have been developed to meet the requirements of the new Technology Mandatory syllabus and can be used with Year 7 from 2019 and Year 8 from 2020.
GPS Cows: Technology Mandatory Years 7-8 2017
GPS Cows is a unit of work co-designed by the NSW Department of Education and CQUniversity Australia for the Technology Mandatory Syllabus 2017. It incorporates content from the Agriculture and Food Technologies and the Digital Technologies contexts. The unit investigates the use of GPS data to improve management of animal welfare. The teacher does not need to be trained in agriculture to teach this unit of work.
To be implemented in 2024.
Computing Technology 7–10 may be studied as a 100-hour or a 200-hour course. The content available for Stage 4 is identical to Stage 5. Teachers teaching the course in Stage 4 may adjust the Stage 5 outcomes as appropriate to the needs of students in Years 7 and 8.
100-hour course

Students undertaking the 100-hour course are required to complete:
- at least one Enterprise Information Systems focus area
- at least one Software Development focus area
- 2–3 focus areas either individually or combined
- practical learning and project work for most of the course time
- at least one group project.
200-hour course

Students undertaking the 200-hour course are required to complete:
- at least 2 Enterprise Information Systems focus areas
- at least 2 Software Development focus areas
- 4–6 focus areas either individually or combined
- practical learning and project work for most of the course time
- at least one group project.
Agricultural Technology years 7–10: Animal production
This unit of work demonstrates a range of ways that the syllabus content can be covered using a beef cattle enterprise as the primary teaching tool.

Agricultural Technology years 7–10: Summer crop and tractor operations
Summer crop and tractor operations program (DOCX 6647KB)
This unit of work uses a plant enterprise to teach students about safe tractor operation. It includes resources for teaching tractor operation to year 9 students.

Agricultural technology years 7–10: Native plant production
Native plant production program (DOCX 90KB)
Native plant production provides students with opportunities to develop an understanding of plant production in the context of a plant-based enterprise. Students are provided with opportunities to gain firsthand practical experience in pre-treating, growing, harvesting and processing of native plants.
Agricultural Technology Years 7-10: Sheep management

In this unit of work, students examine the history of sheep production in Australia for both prime lambs and wool, and explore the many facets of growing, improving, marketing and producing environmentally sustainable sheep products, across both enterprises.

Design and Technology years 7-10: Marketing
This unit of work is designed to fit within the context area of information and communication of Design and Technology years 7-10. Students design, produce and evaluate marketing material for a school event. Students design, produce and evaluate marketing material and products to support the event.

Food Technology Years 7-10: Food product development
Stage 5 Food Technology – Food product development program (DOCX 88KB)
In this unit students examine a range of food product developments, the reasons for food product development and their effect on society. Students investigate a range of emerging technologies in the food industry and outline the steps in food product development whilst designing their own food product.

Food trends program (DOCX 78KB)
Food trends influence food selection, food service and food presentation. Students examine historical and current food trends and explore factors that influence their appeal and acceptability. Students plan, prepare and present safe, appealing food that reflects contemporary food trends.

Graphics Technology Years 7-10: Introduction to graphics
Introduction to graphics program (DOCX 55KB)
The Introduction to Graphics unit is designed for students as the foundation to the Instrument Drawing module. Students complete a series of freehand and instrument drawings that will provide them with the skills and knowledge required to complete an individual design task.

Graphics Technology Years 7-10: Here be dragons

This unit of work addresses Core Module 2: Computer-Aided Design (CAD) of the Graphics Technology Years 7-10 syllabus. The resources include a program, student workbook and a comprehensive manual to support teachers in implementing the unit of work. In this unit, students develop skills in using CAD through the design and animation of a dragon.

Industrial Technology Years 7-10 - Electronics: power hungry

This unit of work is designed for the core module of Industrial Technology – Electronics 7-10. In this unit students will develop a fundamental understanding of electricity, electrical components and the underlying scientific principles and practices that form the foundation of electronics.

Industrial Technology Years 7-10 - Engineering: under pressure

In this unit students will develop a fundamental understanding of engineers' work and the underlying scientific principles and practices that form the foundation of engineering. Students take on the role of the engineer and apply theoretical engineering principles learned throughout this unit to prototype, test, and then build a water tower within a set of applied constraints.

This unit introduces students to the Metal focus area of Industrial Technology. Students complete a range of practical and theory activities that address the content in Core Module Metal 1 through the production of a product. The unit aims to develop metal working skills that can be applied to future projects.

In this unit students develop their understanding of effective web design, including the fundamental principles of accessibility and user experience. Students will develop the skills required to create image assets and build a responsive website.
Industrial Technology Years 7-10 – Timber – Tambour box
Tambour box Program (DOCX 61KB)
In this unit of work, students develop skills in using a variety of basic hand tools and machinery in the production of a small box with a tambour top. Students learn about the properties of timber and how they impact design choices in the development of a project, as well as the interpretation of plans and specifications and the modification of existing plans to meet needs.

Textile Technology Years 7-10: Enter stage left
Enter stage left program (DOCX 81KB)
Costumes can refer to many items of dress and adornment. ‘Enter stage left’ introduces students to cultural and historical perspectives of textiles technology and design. Students design, produce and evaluate a historical, cultural, theatrical or contemporary costume and accessory and supporting documentation.
