Science HSC hub

The HSC hub further supports you in preparing your students for their exams.

It is the responsibility of individual teachers to ensure their students are adequately prepared for the HSC examinations, identifying the suitability of resources, and adapting resources to the students’ context when required.

Search the HSC hub to view available resources for:

The standard model of matter

What is the Standard Model? What evidence suggests that protons and neutrons are not fundamental particles? What is the role of particle accelerators in obtaining evidence that tests and/or validates aspects of theories?

This presentation, along with the video interview with Dr Mark Scarcella can be used to help Year 12 students answer the above questions.

The presentation includes links to suggested classroom activities for introducing the core components of the Standard Model along with the relevant evidence supporting its development. Dr Mark Scarcella outlines his contribution as part of the ATLAS collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson.
