Zig Zag Public School - From the classroom to the community

Students at Zig Zag Public School are making a real impact on road safety by taking their learning beyond the classroom and into their local community.

Located at the end of a narrow street, the school faces ongoing challenges with student drop-off and pick-up. To address these concerns, Principal Vicki Gillmore connected with the school’s local Road Safety Education Officer (RSEO) to explore practical, education-focused solutions

Working in partnership, the RSEO and classroom teacher Elena Wood supported the Student Representative Council (SRC) to plan and produce a student-led road safety video. The RSEO guided the process by helping students identify key road safety messages, shape their ideas into a clear script, and ensure the content aligned with current road safety advice.

Through this authentic learning experience, students explored why children are vulnerable road users and how their behaviour can be unpredictable. They highlighted important messages for families, including the difficulty young children have seeing and being seen by drivers, and the role adults play in modelling safe behaviours by following road rules.

Student video - from the classroom to the community

The video was shared with families via the school’s communication channels, extending the learning beyond the classroom and into everyday decision-making.

This initiative demonstrates how Road Safety Education Officers can support schools to address local issues through curriculum-aligned learning that empowers student voice. By leading this project, Zig Zag PS students not only deepened their understanding of road safety but also contributed to creating a safer school community.
