Syllabus implementation | PDHPE K-10
Personal development, health and physical education focuses on encouraging students to think critically, solve problems and make informed decisions related to health, safety, wellbeing and physical activity.
According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for:
- between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per week in Kindergarten to Year 6
- 300 hours over Years 7 to 10 in each of the years.

Online self-paced learning
Modules use a blended approach to professional learning, including self-paced, online modules and school-based implementation tasks.
Teachers and leaders can pick and choose which modules meet their needs and complete at a time that suits them.

Primary courses
This one-hour module is perfect for teachers who are looking for the basics about the new PDHPE K-10 syllabus. This course is also ideal for curriculum leaders. This module is available for DoE K-6 teachers only.
This module is designed to lead into the ‘Unpacking the PDHPE K-10 syllabus propositions (AC00007) online course and the 'Unpacking the PDHPE K-10 syllabus workshop (RG02979).
This module can be used as elective professional learning to support maintenance at the level of Proficient. Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APSTs): 2.3.2 and 7.2.2.
Through this module you will:
- build knowledge of the new PDHPE K-10 syllabus and its features
- recognise the similarities and differences between current PDHPE syllabuses and the new PDHPE K-10 syllabus
- understand requirements for PDHPE K-10 syllabus implementation
- recognise how to use the syllabus to make learning meaningful in PDHPE.

This online course focuses on developing an understanding of the five PDHPE K-10 syllabus propositions to inform curriculum planning, programming and assessment practices. It outlines each of the evidence based propositions and invites participants to apply their understandings by exploring aspects of propositions, answering questions through polls, quizzes and creating sample teaching/ learning materials.
Participants will:
- Review overarching concepts related to propositions
- Develop deep knowledge and understanding of each of the 5 propositions, including what it looks like in PDHPE K-10 syllabus outcomes and content
- Plan for implementation of propositions by designing learning and teaching experiences which incorporate outcomes and content from the PDHPE K-10 syllabus
- Review research and data to identify the implications for learning, teaching and assessment
- Share existing practice and identify opportunities to improve practice in response to what they learn through the course content.

Through this course you will:
- become familiar with the structures of the new syllabus
- develop a strong understanding of the key features of the new syllabus
- explore the national, state and local evidence base which should inform programming in PDHPE
- reflect on what drives their current programming, teaching and assessment decisions
- critique current practice and plan for action to program for the new syllabus
- use a programming framework to apply each key syllabus feature
- create a series of teaching and learning unit frameworks
- complete a scope and sequence or unit of work for submission post event to apply their understanding and skills from the workshop
- collaborate and share in an online space, including the critique of another person’s work based on NESA compliance.

This course is designed to guide PDHPE Curriculum Leaders and Head Teachers to:
- plan, implement and evaluate processes in their school context
- reflect on and improve programming, teaching, learning and assessment for effective implementation of the PDHPE K-10 syllabus
- support teachers working towards or maintaining the Proficient level of accreditation
Leading curriculum change in PDHPE is made up of 8 online modules. Leaders can select the module (s) which suit and deliver the course flexibly to their staff whilst staff undertake the corresponding syllabus implementation modules and work towards building understanding, skills and maintaining proficiency.

Through this course you will:
- use evaluation tools to review existing practice to identify strengths and areas for improvement
- explore an evidence based approach to programming with the PDHPE K-10 syllabus
- review sample scope and sequences and units of learning to identify opportunities for growth and change in practice
- identify evidence of student needs, creating big ideas and planning units of learning
- create a scope and sequence and unit of learning ready for syllabus implementation
- submit tasks as evidence of learning.

- build knowledge of how to better understand the needs of your students
- identify sources of data within your school context that can be used to identify student needs and create evidence based teaching and learning programs
- access school based evidence to create a student PDHPE profile
- explore teaching strategies and activities to differentiate for specific learning needs and abilities
- plan for differentiation to meet student needs across syllabus content
- create a sequence of learning which includes differentiated teaching and learning strategies
- reflect on differentiation to cater for student needs
- submit tasks as evidence of learning.

- explore what quality assessment practices in PDHPE
- build knowledge of assessment for, of and as learning

- identify opportunities to link assessments to a scope and sequence
- create an assessment task including marking criteria and evidence of learning
- critique an exemplar assessment task
- create an assessment schedule (task).

- explore how to build relationships with and among students
- develop skills to address sensitive issues, prevent public disclosures, maintain safety and promote respectful discussion and inclusion

- explore management strategies for PDH and PE classrooms.
