Online interpreting

If schools prefer to have their interpreting session online this can be done using some of the agencies that are currently used for onsite interpreting. Where it meets the needs of individual schools, private providers may also be used. TIS National and Wollongong City Council do not currently provide this service.

Some of the agencies providing this service are Hunter New England Local Health, Multicultural NSW and the Deaf Society. Choose the preferred supplier when completing your Interpreter Request Form (assignments 3 hours or less).

When choosing which provider to use for languages other than Auslan schools should be mindful of the costs. Hunter New England has a pricing structure which takes into account that interpreters won't need to travel to attend these meetings whereas Multicultural NSW currently makes no differentiation in cost between onsite and online interpreting.

Hunter New England Local Health

At the moment the preferred method of interpreting for this agecy is online. While they are able to offer some onsite interpreting they require clear reasons to support the request. Before booking the interpreter

The requestor is the host of the online session and must create the zoom meeting request on their laptop.
Prior to this the details of the proposed meeting will need to be discussed with the parent including a convenient date and time. If it is ascertained that the parent has a laptop and is able to connect to the Internet they will be able to join the meeting from home by clicking on the link you send them. If the parent doesn't have the technology required you could invite them to the school for the meeting (providing the Principal agrees). You may wish to use the Telephone Interpreting Service to have these initial discussions.
