Implementing the Best Start Kindergarten Assessment


This professional learning is designed for kindergarten teachers who will administer the Best Start Kindergarten Assessment in 2020. The course provides guidance on the effective and consistent administration of the assessment. Participants will gain an understanding of the functionality of the Best Start Kindergarten tool and how student responses maps to the National Literacy and Numeracy Progressions. Teachers will reflect on their learning and create a plan for administering the assessment that they can implement in 2020.

Who should participate?

Early Stage One teachers and school executive.

Mode of delivery

Face to face (5 hours).


This course will assist teachers in using the Best Start Kindergarten Assessment. They will explore how to access feedback to analyse student strengths, identify patterns of responses and find a starting point for teaching. Teachers will develop an understanding of how student responses are mapped to the National Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions. They will investigate how the information captured during the assessment transfers to PLAN2 and can be analysed in order to plan for targeted and quality teaching and learning experiences for Kindergarten students.

This one-day course is divided into four sessions:

  • Session 1: Introduction to the Best Start Kindergarten
  • Session 2: Administering the assessment
  • Session 3: Navigating PLAN2
  • Session 4: Reflecting and planning

NESA Registered Professional Development

Completing 'Implementing the Best Start Kindergarten Assessment' will contribute 5 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing 5.2.2, 6.2.2 and 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
