Effective reading: phonological awareness


This professional learning provides Kindergarten teachers with an opportunity to explore the practical application of evidence based teaching of reading.

Who should participate?

K-2 teachers (specifically aimed at Kindergarten teachers)

Mode of delivery

Face-to-face (one day).


This professional learning focuses on exploring how phonological awareness and oral language is necessary for effective reading instruction. Teachers will gain an understanding of how phonological awareness can be explicitly and systematically taught.

Completing this course will help teachers to:

  • reflect and implement evidence based reading practices, with an understanding of the necessary components of effective instruction
  • plan, assess and differentiate effective instruction to support the development of phonological awareness for students, within a reading program
  • explore practical aspects of phonological awareness teaching and learning in the classroom

Completing 'Effective reading: phonological awareness' (Course code RG04908) will contribute to 5 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing 2.5.2, 5.1.2, 6.2.2 and 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
