Note: 'Strengthening practice in writing' is only available to writing pilot schools in 2020.
This five hour face-to-face workshop develops the capacity of Best Start Year 7 teams from continuing schools to analyse their students? feedback from the writing assessment pilot in Scout and PLAN2. Participants will plan for the implementation of effective teaching and learning practices in writing with a focus on sentence structure and punctuation. The workshop develops an understanding of the writing marking criteria and how they link to indicators in the Writing element of the National Literacy Learning Progression.
Who should participate?
Year 7 teachers and school leaders of schools who are participating in the Best Start Year 7 writing pilot in 2020. A maximum of two staff members may attend. The equivalent of one day casual relief funding for each staff member attending will be provided.
Additional places may become available. Schools will need to cover the costs of casual relief for any additional participants.
Mode of delivery
Face-to-face (one day).
Participants will use their Best Start Year 7 writing assessment analysis to determine student needs and plan targeted teaching and learning experiences and activities. School teams will engage in learning activities and explore teaching strategies aligned to assessed writing skills linked to the Grammar and Punctuation sub-elements of the progression.
Completing this course will help you to:
- analyse school Best Start Year 7 writing feedback
- identify school trends, student needs and teaching priorities
- develop a plan of action to respond to the school's Best Start Year 7 writing feedback
- build understanding in the teaching of sentence structure and punctuation
- support teachers in all learning areas to implement targeted teaching strategies for writing improvement
- use the PLAN2 'Areas of Focus' feature to support targeted teaching

Completing 'Best Start Year 7 Strengthening Practice in writing schools' will contribute 5 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing 2.5.2, 5.4.2, 6.2.2 and 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
