Best Start Kindergarten

In 2019, a revised Best Start Kindergarten Assessment will be used in all primary schools to support the National Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions.

Purpose

This one day face-to-face professional learning for Early Stage One school leadership teams is designed to assist schools to effectively lead the implementation of the revised Best Start Kindergarten Assessment in 2019.

The Best Start Kindergarten Assessment has been revised in light of current research reflective of the Literacy and Numeracy Strategy 2017-2020 and is now linked to the National Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions via an online tool. Events are scheduled to take place in of locations across the state in Term 4 2018.

This initial face-to-face professional learning will be complemented by elearning modules available through MyPL.

Who should attend?

Schools are encouraged to send a team of up to 3 teachers - including one member of the school leadership team - that will be involved in teaching or leading Kindergarten in 2019.

Content

Participants will gain an understanding and insight into the 2019 Best Start Kindergarten Assessment. They will be guided through the updates and changes informed by the feedback from the 2018 implementation in EAfS and Action Plan schools.

Early Stage One leadership teams will be guided through the effective use of the online Best Start Kindergarten Assessment tool to administer the assessment, record student’s responses and how to use the information gathered from the assessment to create targeted teaching and learning activities for each individual student. The online tool, available through the ALAN website, automatically transfers the results of the assessment to PLAN2 and the National Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions once the results are submitted.

School teams will work collaboratively to devise an action plan for the successful implementation of the Best Start Kindergarten Assessment for their school context.
