The journey

Killarney Heights Public School is an inclusive primary school providing a bilingual education for over 700 students in Northern Sydney. More than thirty languages are spoken by our families who come from more than forty ethnic backgrounds. Our school is committed to providing rich programs to develop skills in critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration and technology to enable all students to reach their full potential academically, socially and emotionally.

Our students are excelling in literacy and numeracy and are achieving higher than expected growth on external performance measures. Our teachers have high expectations for all students and are using best practice to achieve improved student performance and to cater for individual student needs. We focus on improving outcomes for all students and we are a leading school in differentiation. Our school leadership team is excelling in demonstrating instructional leadership and promoting and modelling effective, evidence-based practice. Our teachers are differentiating teaching and learning activities in both literacy and numeracy.

In Mathematics, we have introduced an approach where teachers are using pre and post testing as a diagnostic tool to determine students’ strengths and areas requiring support. Teachers allocate fluid groupings, differentiate teaching, and monitor the effectiveness of teaching and learning programs. This individualised learning approach has been supported through demonstration lessons and ongoing professional learning. Our teachers have embraced this practice and they ensure that learning is adjusted, scaffolded and extended, catering for all students. The impact of this is that all students are demonstrating success in learning.
