English is built around the explicit teaching of contextual knowledge, comprehension, thinking and reflecting skills and processes. The teaching of English encourages a love of literature and develops students' knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating to empower them to become confident communicators, critical and imaginative thinkers, lifelong learners and informed, active participants in Australian society.

The English syllabus are located on the NSW Education Standards Authority website:

An additional resource to support the explicit teaching of the knowledge and skill in the English syllabuses is the English Textual Concepts and Learning Processes. By using the English textual concepts teachers are able to chart the development of student undersntanding through each stage of learning.
