English sample K-6 scope and sequences

Examples of how schools can organise a K-6 English scope and sequence and the elements that could be included.

Introduction

The sample scope and sequence documents for Stage 2 and Stage 3 incorporate advice from NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and include the following elements:

  • the scope of learning in relation to the syllabus outcomes to be addressed
  • the sequence of learning in relation to the syllabus outcomes to be addressed
  • duration of the learning
  • syllabus outcomes addressed (these are commonly represented by outcome codes)
  • relevant information for particular learning areas or particular school requirements.

Each document is a sample that schools may adapt to meet the needs of their students and local context.

Approach 1 – Term based learning overview

Approach 2 – term based questions and content

Features

  • syllabus outcomes
  • focus questions - links are provided to explore the department's videos and information about the English textual concepts content - based on the English textual concepts
  • texts – schools have the opportunity to select from a range of texts which highlight the English textual concepts. Schools have the flexibility to select their own texts using the Suggested texts for the English K-10 Syllabus and following the guidelines of the Content and text requirements (NESA)
  • opportunities for integration with learning across the curriculum
  • supporting materials

Most suitable for schools with one or more classes per stage level.
