Photography, video and digital Imaging
In the content endorsed course of Photography, video and digital imaging (PVDI), students use frames to learn about photography, its development and history. Students develop their knowledge and skills in a broad range of art/photographic making techniques and use a process diary as they develop their ideas. The HSC course involves both a written exam and submitted photographic and/or video and /or digital imaging works, all marked internally.
Making
Students will develop knowledge and skills in making when:
- using judgement when making artistic photographic decisions for varying contexts, audience purposes, and situations
- making photographic, video and digital images that exploring the content the frames
- using research to guide artistic photographic practice
- experimenting with various processes, techniques and skills adapted from various photographic, video and digital forms.
- considering, interpreting and influencing meaning when constructing layers into their photographic, video and digital images.
Critical and historical studies
Students will learn about critical and historical studies when:
- assessing and describing particular photographic, video and digital artists, artworks, audience responses and representations of the world
- investigating points of view expressed through art by photographic, video and digital artists in various styles and interpretations of the world
- using judgment to justify and argue qualities and meaning of a photographic, video and digital artwork or an event as represented through art history
- studying representations of history in artworks as portrayed by photographic, video and digital artist’s ideas, issues, events, circumstances, beliefs and technologies
- reading, viewing and criticising critical and historical interpretations and evaluations of photographic, video and digital artworks, exhibitions, personal and written accounts.
Teaching and learning resources
The HSC photography unit ‘Appropriating Hockney’ provides students with opportunities to investigate the practice of David Hockney and incorporate his compositional decisions and concepts into their own digital photographic practice. It is informed by a critical and historical study of photographic artists that link to the units theme. The unit addresses the NSW stage 6 photography, video and digital imaging (PVDI) syllabus module DI5: The arranged image. It encourages students to use a variety of digital techniques in their art /photographic making practice and develops students’ knowledge and understanding of photography in their critical and historical accounts.
This unit can be used as one of the three modules taught in year 12 PVDI. Provided is the HSC photography program, yearly assessment schedule, scope and sequence, practical assessment task and stage 6 visual arts life skills modified assessment tasks for practical work.
