Eligibility Criteria

To apply, you will need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and be either:

  • an industry professional:
    • with a minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience within the last 10 years; and
    • that has completed a recognised undergraduate degree which included studies in pure or applied mathematics; and
    • that will be continuing or entering an initial teacher education program (including initial integrated teacher education programs) from Semester 1, 2023, at a recognised Australian university or tertiary institution, to be completed by no later than the end of 2027, to become a teacher of secondary mathematics e.g. Bachelor of Mathematics/Bachelor of Teaching, Master of Teaching (Secondary Mathematics)*, etc

or

  • a currently enrolled university student or intending to enrol (commencing Semester 1, 2023)
    • that will be continuing or entering an initial teacher education program (including initial integrated teacher education programs) from Semester 1, 2023, or an undergraduate degree followed by an initial teacher education program, at a recognised Australian university or tertiary institution, to be completed by no later than the end of 2027, to become a teacher of secondary mathematics e.g. Bachelor of Mathematics/Bachelor of Teaching, Master of Teaching (Secondary Mathematics)*, etc.

or

  • an HSC student:
    • be completing the HSC in a NSW or ACT secondary school or TAFE NSW institute in 2022; and
    • that will be entering an initial teacher education program (including initial integrated teacher education programs) from Semester 1, 2023, or an undergraduate degree followed by an initial teacher education program, at a recognised Australian university or tertiary institution, to be completed by no later than the end of 2027, to become a teacher of secondary mathematics e.g. Bachelor of Mathematics/Bachelor of Teaching, Master of Teaching (Secondary Mathematics)*, etc.

and

  • be willing to be employed for up to 2.5 days per week as an educational paraprofessional in a NSW public school in your final three semesters of study**; and
  • be willing to accept an appointment as a permanent full-time mathematics teacher to a NSW public school on completion of your studies and remain in the position for a minimum period of three years.

* Your studies will need to meet the department's and NESA’s academic requirements for employment as a secondary mathematics teacher.

** You will commence part-time work as an Educational Paraprofessional in your final three semesters of study, for the remaining duration of your teacher training. If you have 3 semesters or less of study remaining, you will commence part-time work as an Educational Paraprofessional after the completion of your first semester of study while on scholarship, for the remaining duration of your teacher training.
