Use the packing list below as a guide and customise to suit your specific needs and preferences. Before departing, double-check your packing list to ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable five-day regional and rural trip with the NSW Department of Education.

Clothing:

Ensure you select appropriate clothing that you can wear in both a school setting, as well as during periods of travel and adventure.

• T-shirts/tops (casual and smart casual) - no singlets, sleeveless or cropped items
• Long-sleeve shirts or light sweaters
• Jacket or windbreaker
• Smart casual pants/jeans/shorts/skirts (length must be appropriate)
• Undergarments/socks
• Pyjamas/sleepwear
• Enclosed shoes such as a clean and presentable pair of sandshoes (e.g. converse) and dress shoes
• Joggers and activewear (tights are acceptable if covered by a long top or jacket)

Clothing should be free from offensive language, symbols and images and must not promote violence, discrimination or any illegal activity.

Weather protection:

• Sun hat or cap
• Sunglasses
• Sunscreen (SPF 50+)
• Insect repellent
• Mini umbrella or poncho

Toiletries

• Toothbrush and toothpaste
• Hairbrush/comb
• Shampoo and conditioner (consider using travel-sized bottles)
• Body wash or soap
• Deodorant
• Personal care products

Personal items

• Medications and prescriptions
• Contact lenses or prescription glasses
• Small backpack or day bag for day trips
• Wallet carrying personal ID (including student ID card), bank cards and a small amount of cash for incidentals
• Phone charger
• Water bottle (complimentary water bottle will be supplied to all participants)

Miscellaneous/Optional items

• Power bank for electronic devices
• Travel pillow for comfortable rest during journey
• Pen
• Reading material or other suitable entertainment
• Earplugs for better rest
• Earphones or headphones
• Motion sickness medication (if prone to motion sickness)
• Travel lock for securing your luggage
• First aid kit
• Light snacks

Getting to Parramatta State Office, 105 Phillip St, Parramatta NSW 2150

• Organise transport to 105 Phillip St, Parramatta prior to your departure
• Use TripView to plan your journey via public transport
• The nearest train station is Parramatta Train Station, which is approximately a 7 minute walk to the Parramatta State Office
• The nearest bus stop is at Smith St after Phillip St
• All day parking in Parramatta is limited. You are able to use Parking Finder to view locations and costs but we suggest utlising this option as a last resort.

Arrive at 105 Phillip St, Parramatta NSW 2150 no later than 7:30am for an 8:00am departure.

Luggage

• Ensure your personal luggage and any carry-on bags are correctly labelled with your full name, mobile number and address
• As a general rule, luggage should not weigh more than 25kg and should not exceed the total linear dimension (length + width + height) of 140cm
• Your larger bag will likely be stored under the bus/coach. Ensure you pack a smaller bag or backpack with essentials such as water, personal handheld devices and medications to ensure easy access on the bus trip

Review the itinerary

• Familiarise yourself with the itinerary.

Stay sun safe

• Wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high SPF to protect yourself from harmful UV rays.

Stay hydrated

• Temperatures can reach up to 30 degrees during September in regional/rural areas. Carry a water bottle with you at all times.

Have money on hand

• Some rural areas have limited banking facilities. While the trip is expenses-paid, we recommend carrying a small amount of cash for incidentals or in case of emergencies.

Be punctual

• Ensure you’re on time, or early, for scheduled activities and departures to make the most of the planned school visits and activities.

Stay safe

• Pay attention to safety briefings and instructions provided by the NSW Department of Education staff or tour guides.

Compile a list of emergency contacts

• Be aware of the Australian emergency service number (000) and save emergency contacts in your phone, including department staff and other participants so you can reach out if needed.

Connect with fellow students and teachers

• Use this opportunity to meet and connect with others on the trip. You may find that you create lasting connections which can lead to future employment opportunities or a support network that you can reach out to.

Respect wildlife and nature

• Follow the guidelines provided by park authorities to protect the environment and wildlife. Respect and support conservation efforts.

Packing

Keep a travel journal

• Consider documenting your experiences, thoughts, and emotions in a travel journal. It will serve as a cherished keepsake of your journey.

• Appreciate and respect the diverse backgrounds and perspectives in the communities and use this opportunity to learn from one another.

Bring an open mind

• Be open to trying new things and experiencing the beauty of regional, rural and remote NSW in ways you might not have considered before.
