The NSW Department of Education is strengthening its connection with future teachers through a new network of University Partnership Leads (UPLs), an initiative linked to the department’s Early Career Academy for Teachers.

The Early Career Academy for Teachers has been designed to support future and early career teachers from the beginning of their university studies through to their first years in the classroom. The Academy acts as a centre of excellence that connects aspiring teachers with resources, programs and support, setting them up for success in NSW public schools.

A key part of this initiative is the introduction of University Partnership Leads who are experienced NSW public school teachers based on campus at selected universities. Their role is to build stronger connections between universities and the department, while providing practical and personalised support to pre-service teachers throughout their studies.

What support can University Partnership Leads provide?

University Partnership Leads are available to support pre-service teachers as they navigate the early stages of their teaching journey by providing:

• one-on-one career guidance and mentoring

• advice on approval to teach and employment pathways in NSW public schools

• support preparing for professional experience placements

• information about scholarships, programs and early employment opportunities.

Whether students are just starting their degree or preparing to graduate, UPLs are there to offer guidance and help them feel confident about the next steps in their teaching career.
