With six years of teaching experience in English and PDHPE, Georgia has recently transitioned into a careers adviser role at Rose Bay Secondary College. She has been completing her Graduate Certificate in Careers Development whilst working in the position. Georgia sees her pathway into careers advising as a natural extension of her work in student wellbeing and mentorship. When it comes to promoting teaching as a profession, she leads with honesty and heart.

When students come through her door to seek advice about becoming a teacher, her message to them is clear:

‘Teaching is a career that constantly gives, where every year group and every day can be so different. I encourage students to see that teaching offers a career of variety, and a career built on impact.’

Georgia has found that real-world exposure is one of the most powerful ways to inspire future teachers. Work experience placements in primary schools have proven particularly impactful, giving high school students a firsthand look at the profession in action.

‘I’ve witnessed the personal growth and confidence students, particularly young boys, feel when they mentor younger peers.’

For this reason, if formal placements aren’t available during work experience, she creates opportunities within the school for students to become involved in mentoring, wellbeing programs and leadership activities so that students can begin to see their own capacity to influence and inspire.

Georgia doesn’t shy away from guiding students into the profession of teaching.

‘I am a teacher, because my teachers inspired me. They led, role modelled and supported me through my teenage years of life, and the impact that I felt they had on me – I want to have the same impact on the students I teach. I try to encourage students who are interested in teaching to lean into this. Teachers become teachers because of impact and influence. If this is their why, teaching will never be a chore.’

As a result of her authenticity as a teacher, several former students have shared that Georgia inspired them to consider teaching as a career. For her, that influence is the greatest professional compliment.

To stay up to date, Georgia regularly engages with the Careers Advisers Association and connects with teaching networks online to stay informed about the latest opportunities for students. She follows the Teach NSW social media channels closely, sharing updates about scholarships and pathways into teaching with aspiring students. By combining accurate information with authentic storytelling, she helps students see teaching not just as a job, but as a calling.

Where might you find Georgia when she’s outside the careers office? Georgia enjoys surfing, reading, painting and travelling. She dreams of returning to the picturesque landscapes of New Zealand, her favourite holiday destination, and still fondly reflects on a homestay experience she had in the Sapa Hills region of Vietnam. When travelling, she makes sure to grab a collectable mug or magnet to remember her adventures before returning home.
