The department is currently developing a small pilot program to provide School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs) with the opportunity to retrain as teachers within NSW public schools.
This initiative will create new pathways into teaching by supporting SLSOs to qualify for Initial Teacher Education (ITE) courses, leveraging their knowledge and experience while maintaining a connection to their current school.
Additionally, the program will complement a range of initiatives under the Teacher Supply Strategy to continue to attract and grow quality teachers to support and advance students within NSW public schools.
When will the pilot program begin?
We are currently working with our key stakeholders to create the highest quality program to support SLSOs through their teaching qualification and ensure they excel as teachers.
A small pilot with limited places will be conducted in 2023. We anticipate additional program information will be available in the second half of 2022.
Where can I find more information?
We will release further details as we continue to develop the pilot program with our stakeholders.
