Gain approval to teach an additional subject
Learn more about gaining approval to teach an additional subject based on successful teaching experience in NSW public schools.
Inclusive/Special Education
Qualified, accredited teachers are eligible to seek flagged status in inclusive/special education to recognise their valuable skills and commitment to implementing inclusive teaching strategies and creating learning environments where all students can participate and succeed alongside their peers.
Teachers who have demonstrated specific skills following successful teaching experience working with students with disability, or who have additional learning and support needs, can seek recognition of this experience with the support of a school principal.
Teachers who are granted flagged status in inclusive/special education are eligible to be considered for appointment to permanent teaching positions in inclusive/special education.
To be eligible for flagged status in inclusive/special education, you will need to have completed a minimum of 12 months full-time (203 days) or equivalent part-time inclusive/special education teaching experience, within the last 5 years, in a NSW public school or in another Australian school or education system* and have the endorsement of your school principal.
The Application for Flagging Status in Inclusive/Special Education form should be completed for NSW public school teaching experience and shared with your school principal for endorsement.
Requests for flagging status in inclusive/special education should be submitted via email to the Teacher Approvals team at Additional.Approval@det.nsw.edu.au.
* Teachers from other systems within Australia will need to provide a work report from their school principal detailing their teaching experience in inclusive/special education.
Secondary – PD/H/PE, HSIE and TAS
Qualified, accredited teachers who have verified skills and experience in teaching subjects within the PD/H/PE, HSIE and TAS subject areas, not covered in their initial teacher training, may be eligible to gain approval to teach these additional subjects based on successful, verified teaching experience.
If you have completed a minimum of two years full-time (406 days) relevant experience or equivalent part-time experience, within the last 5 years, in NSW public schools, you may be eligible to gain recognition of this experience and be granted approval to teach in the relevant teaching subject(s) within the secondary key learning areas of PD/H/PE, HSIE or TAS.
Experience in teaching the additional subject to junior classes (years 7 - 10) and senior classes (years 11 - 12) may be required. Teachers are required to have taught a load sufficient for the principal to support and endorse their application for approval to teach an additional subject based on evidence of success in the classroom.
If you have undertaken the required amount of teaching experience in NSW public schools, the Application for Approval to Teach an Additional Subject on the Basis of Teaching Experience form should be completed and shared with your school principal for endorsement. Once completed, please email your application form to Additional.Approval@det.nsw.edu.au.
