From the editor
Welcome to the student voices hub – an online website dedicated to showcasing students’ work, opinions, news and creativity. Whether it be your views on a current global issue, a story about your school in the community, a song you've written or an artwork you've made - we want to know about it. This is also a site where you can find out about exciting opportunities, competitions and awards; and easily connect with support services for your wellbeing and learning. Importantly we are making sure the site truly showcases what students want to read, hear and watch by bringing together a student advisory committee to meet monthly and give advice on content and design. We hope you enjoy this new initiative and are inspired to submit your own work for publication online.
Editorial guidelines
Student voices is a student-centred online hub of works commissioned from and submitted by students and curated by the Communication and Engagement unit of the Department of Education.
The charter of the student voices channel is to:
- Inform and challenge readers and viewers with factual news reports and opinion pieces
- Provide a platform for public school students to publish creative works
- Cover topics of relevance to students, even where controversial
- Ensure coverage of issues is impartial in reportage and respects the rights of others
- Provide a variety of opinions and perspectives on contemporary issues
- Represent all student demographics within the NSW public school system
- Serve as an opportunity for students to obtain real-world media skills
- Report all issues in an ethical way in line with the Journalist Code of Ethics.
Editorial process
Works will be accepted by commission from the student voices editor and direct submission by students and teachers.
All works will undergo an editing process before publication which will include students receiving editorial feedback on written works. The editor’s decision on publication will be final, but students can choose to withdraw an article or creative work at any time prior to publication.
All authors will be credited with a byline and will retain copyright of their work. Where more than one person has contributed to a work, all contributors will be included in the credit.
Written articles should be 100 to 400 words for standard news, or up to 800 words for an in-depth feature or opinion piece.
Written works must adhere to the Department of Education style guide and not contain profanities or libellous comment.

How to submit your work
If you are interested in submitting a creative work, news article, podcast, film or opinion piece to student voices fill out our online submission form.
Or send an email to studentvoices@det.nsw.edu.au with the word pitch in the subject line and a short outline of what you want to submit.
Receipt of every pitch will be acknowledged and the editorial staff will work with students to refine ideas where necessary.
Encouraging debate
We accept that at times student voices may run counter to government or departmental policy. Where this occurs our approach will be to show the breadth of student opinions on an issue and, if necessary, invite a response from relevant adult voices.
