What we do
Mid Coast Connect offers a variety of youth, wellbeing, mentoring, workplace learning, career development and transition support programs. We provide customised programs and services to meet student needs, providing personalised learning experiences for individuals and groups. We deliver innovative, flexible programs to assist young people overcome barriers and challenges to education and employment. Programs also support student transitions through school, and from school to further education, training and/or employment.
- Keeping on Track
The program provides mentoring and wrap-around support for students engaged in school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SbATs). The program help students remain engaged in school and successfully complete their apprenticeships / traineeship requirements and HSC. Support is provided to help students balance the demands of school, work and training requirements. This includes work-readiness training, mentoring and wrap-around support to address non-school related barriers such as housing instability, transport, family break-down and other challenges. Participants are allocated a Mentor who is their designated support person for the duration of the school-based apprenticeship or traineeship. Support meetings are held at least monthly, or more often if required, at the school, in the workplace or at TAFE. Mentors provide one-on-one assistance with:
- organisation and managing workloads
- school and coursework
- communication with teachers and employers
- study programs
- problem solving
- career planning
- accessing other support services
- post-school transition planning.
Costs: $2000 per student, per year, depending on requirements. Costs for the services will be subject to direct negotiation between Mid Coast Connect and the school. We will work with schools to provide appropriate customised programs.
Engagement or Re-engagement Services
- Better Opportunities and Outcomes for School Transition (BOOST)
A tailored, early intervention approach to improving outcomes for vulnerable young people still at school, to help them reach their full social and economic potential. BOOST provides a triage-type support and mentoring program to assist Year 9 to 12 students in developing positive engagement at school and/or their transition from school to work. The program aims to overcome individual barriers and challenges through a case-managed, goal-setting approach. It is facilitated by a youth worker or mentor and can be delivered to individuals or small groups within school. The frequency and duration of sessions is negotiable. Our case management model provides a capability assessments and person-centred career and transition plan, which identifies key barriers to be addressed. The program includes:
- self-awareness and confidence building activities
- employability skills
- leadership and team building
- goal-setting and aspiration building
- skills mapping and connections to career planning
- intensive pre-employment support to improve work readiness.
Costs: Ranges from $1000 per student/year to $5000 per group, depending on requirements. Costs are subject to direct negotiation between Mid Coast Connect and the school. We will work with schools to provide appropriate customised programs.
School Refusal Services
The Pathways program re-engages school-refusers back into school or supports them to successfully transition into alternative education, training or employment. The program takes a case management and mentoring approach. It aims to develop an awareness of the relevance of education and encourages an appreciation of lifelong learning. Students develop self-awareness, self-esteem and confidence through a practical, solution-focused program. Students are supported to re-engage with school, develop employability skills, participate in work experience, develop job seeking skills and prepare for the world of work. Program results include successful transition back into school, into training and employment; including apprenticeships and traineeships.
The program is targeted at Year 9 to 12 students and facilitated in school by youth workers and mentors. It can be delivered to individuals or small groups and the frequency and duration of sessions are negotiable. An individual plan is developed with the school to help students overcome any barriers to engagement with education, training and employment. Students are provided with individual case management, capability assessments and a person-centred career and transition plan.
Costs: Program delivery costs range from $1000 per student to $5000 per group depending on requirements. Costs for the services will be subject to direct negotiation between Mid Coast Connect and the school. We will work with schools to provide appropriate customised programs.
Youth Work Services
- The Healthy Mind, Body, Soul
This program addresses the key elements of social, emotional and physical well-being as contributors to successful engagement in learning. It aims to build resilience in students, increase their self-awareness, problem solving and decision-making skills so that they can resolve the challenges they experience in daily life. The program provides the opportunity for self-discovery, increased self-awareness, self-development, foundations for building strong and healthy relationships, coping mechanisms and well-being strategies. Students learn to recognise the role exercise, health and nutrition have on their well-being and are provided opportunities to improve their strength and fitness in a non-competitive environment. Interest activities and projects provide the opportunity for students to develop their communication, interpersonal skills and self-confidence in an informal, supportive and non-judgemental environment. This program is targeted at Year 8 to 12 students and facilitated by a Youth Worker/Mentor. The program can be delivered to individuals or small groups and the frequency and duration of sessions are negotiable. The holistic program has three streams:
- Healthy Mind: based on Beyond Blue’s Sensibility program this a strengths-based resilience program to enhance and maintain emotional and psychological resilience
- Healthy Body: nutrition, exercise and physical activity and their impact on well-being
- Healthy Soul: gratitude, mindfulness, meditation, relaxation, stress management and activities reflecting student interests
Costs: Program starts from $5,000, depending on requirements. Costs for the services will be subject to direct negotiation between Mid Coast Connect and the school. We will work with schools to provide appropriate customised programs.
Other Student Engagement and Attendance Services
- Community Partnership
This program provides opportunities to develop partnerships with community organisations, business and industry to help engage young people in their learning. Partnerships can be curriculum specific or for a general program based on school needs. The aim of Community Partnership is to build partnerships that support young people to reach their full educational and social potential. Partnerships can bring external real-world expertise to students, provide exposure to industry-based learning, make learning relevant and raise aspirations. Mid Coast Connect is flexible and adaptable in developing and negotiating programs.
