Community Activities Lake Macquarie (CALM)

A non-government organisation providing mentoring, engagement and parenting services to students and families in the Lake Macquarie area.

Who we are

Community Activities Lake Macquarie (CALM) is a local, flexible and responsive provider of child, family and youth support services. CALM has been supporting children and young people for more than 30 years and we are proud of our strong relationships with local schools.

What we do

CALM provides early-intervention programs and services to children, families and young people in Lake Macquarie. We offer evidence-based programs including family support, youth services, student wellbeing and community development. We recognise that early identification and trusted professional relationships are critical for successful interventions. All of our staff hold qualifications relevant to their position and current Working with Children clearances. They also have access to professional support, mandatory reporting training and are supported by their team leader.

Mentoring

  • Junior Top Blokes Mentoring Program
    This is an 8 - 16 week program for male students. It uses an early-intervention framework and provides a safe male-to-male environment that fosters critical thinking on taboo topics. We also provide 'before and after' evaluation data to participating schools. This program is delivered in small groups of up to 15 young men for one period a week and is most suitable for boys in Years 9 and 10.

Cost: $2,000 per 8-week program. Can be delivered as a Crossroad by negotiation.

Engagement or Re-Engagement Services

  • Family Support - individual and group
    Family case work, parenting skills, referrals and evidence-based groups such as Seasons for Growth, Circles of Security, Money minded, Tuning into Kids / Teens, Rock + Water, Triple P, 1-2-3 Emotion Coaching, Keeping Children Safe.
  • School Wellbeing - individual and group
    Providing in school support to build resistance and wellbeing. Includes referrals, breakfast clubs, social skills groups, peer-mentoring and anti-bullying strategies.
  • Youth Services - group only
    Youth development, sector connections, workshops including Free to Be / body image, Crossroads, RAGE, Lovebites, Cyber Safety and tailored topics
  • Bright Minds - group only
    An early intervention suicide prevention and mental health program for Year 7 and 9 students. Our workshops are youth-led and use multimedia. It is supported by free teacher training (ASIST and SafeTalk), Youth Support packs and has DoE Ethics approval. This is a free program.
  • Cardiff Collaborative Project - individual and group
    This partner program supports students at risk of entering Juvenile Justice. In school and community programs include Employment Assessment, Community Art, Top Blokes, Fit for Change and case work. This is a free program.

Cost: Most programs are free. Some groups have a small fee for service.

Parenting Programs

CALM Family Support provides support to individuals and groups, primarily in west Lake Macquarie. Parenting programs can be delivered at school, home or in the community. Services include:

  • family case work

Other Student Engagement and Attendance Services

CALM Staff can provide a range of accredited, non-accredited and tailored topics for staff development and parent information sessions. These include:

  • ASIST and Safe talk (suicide prevention)
  • trauma-informed practice
  • body image
  • self-esteem, connecting with services.

CALM staff hold qualifications in social work, community development, teaching, youth work and evidence-based programs.

Cost: ASIST and SafeTalk (suicide prevention) are currently free. Some topics and services have a small fee for service.
