Skills brokers

Who are skills brokers?

If you're unemployed or are in danger of losing your job, skills brokers are there to help. They will work with you so you can get new skills and training that makes you more employable. They'll also try to find you a suitable role and will reach out to employers looking for specific skills.

How will a skills broker help me?

Skills brokers can put you in touch with the right organisations and people in your region.

They provide personalised support to help you:

  • retrain to gain new skills
  • improve your existing skills
  • explore new career pathways that suit you
  • access free or low-fee training
  • connect with local industries.

They also manage local events in your region, like career expos and information sessions, where you can speak directly to representatives from industry and training organisations.

Am I eligible for assistance?

You may be able to access advice, guidance and support from a skills broker if you fit into at least one of the categories below:

  • out of work
  • receiving an income support payment
  • aged 16–24
  • expected to become unemployed.

How do I join a training course?

First, a skills broker will assess what training is best for you. Then you’ll need to enrol with a Registered Training Organisation (a TAFE, private college or a community college) to do the training. In most cases the training will be free. Job seekers and employers may need to provide proof of eligibility upon enrolment. The skills broker will help you with further information.
