Across the state, more than 600 people are earning and learning across 73 NSW Government agencies and State-Owned Corporations under the 1,000 NSW Public Sector Apprentices and Trainees Program.
One of the program’s trainees is Leilani Reid who commenced with Revenue NSW in early 2025 and is pursuing her passion for business while also studying for her Certificate IV in Project Management Practice.
Thanks to her hard work and professionalism, Leilani has quickly secured herself a unique role that sees her balance her traineeship part-time with a project officer position in the Operational Excellence & Strategy team.
“The 1,000 NSW Public Sector Apprentices and Trainees Program has been pivotal and changed the game for me,” Leilani said. “My traineeship took me past the point of where I wanted to be and I have already achieved so much.”
As a trainee, Leilani supports her business unit’s daily operations through activities like managing the monthly newsletter, managing uniform orders and driving research for eLearning.
“My experience in the traineeship is giving me exposure to strategic initiatives and conversations while collaborating in a team that works closely with executives,” she said. “I’m really enjoying facing challenges, problem solving to work around issues and delivering continuous improvement and innovation.”
Working as a project officer in a temporary assignment, Leilani acts as an executive assistant to her director, manages stakeholders and supports Strategy and Innovation business managers.
“I find joy in leading teams, supporting other people and enabling other people to shine. I can do all of that through project management,”
Throughout her traineeship, Leilani has shown remarkable growth and resilience, navigating her neurodivergence with confidence and contributing strongly within a corporate environment.
“I think ADHD has been my superpower in my journey; it doesn’t hold me back and I wouldn’t be where I am today without my neurodivergence.”
Thanks to her traineeship with Revenue NSW, Leilani said she has developed a well-rounded foundation that sees her playing her part in shaping organisational priorities.
“Through my traineeship, I have gained hands‑on experience in project management, business strategy, corporate communications and employee management,” she said.
Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education, Steve Whan, commended learners like Leilani on their success and wished them luck with their training.
“Our 1,000 Apprentices and Trainees Program participants are building careers that will keep NSW strong by ensuring we have a pipeline of skilled workers to continue delivery of essential public services,” Mr Whan said.
In its final round, the 1,000 NSW Public Sector Apprentices and Trainees program is now recruiting more than 400 additional roles across 73 agencies, taking the total jobs that will be offered under the program above the original 1,000 target. Take a leap with your career today and apply online.
