TAE qualifications are required by anyone who wants to teach or deliver accredited training in Australia in their area of expertise.
Currently, NSW is experiencing shortages of suitably qualified vocational education and training (VET) trainers and assessors.
Fee-free training in TAE is available to any eligible NSW resident, whether you are a job seeker or existing worker looking to upskill or upgrade.
Courses include the nationally recognised TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
Training is fully funded by the NSW and Commonwealth governments.
- Many courses and locations are available across NSW, including online.
- There is a high demand for new VET trainers and assessors across priority industries including the care sectors, trades, construction and logistics/warehousing.
- Those who hold an outdated TAE qualification can upgrade to the new qualification or assessor skills set.
- Enrolments close on 31 December 2023.

Existing workers from the following priority industries are strongly encouraged to enrol in a fee-free-TAE qualification:
- Care sectors – aged care, disability care, early childhood education and care
- Traditional trades – electrotechnology, carpentry, plumbing, motor technician, fabrication, hairdressing, commercial cookery
- Construction
- Logistics/warehousing.
Entry requirements
If you successfully complete any of the following full qualifications:
- TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
- TAE50116 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training, or a
- TAE50216 Diploma of Training Design and Development
and would like to become a VET trainer and assessor in a specific industry, then you must be able to demonstrate vocational competency in your proposed teaching and assessing area. Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, and may include, but is not limited to, holding a relevant unit of competency or qualification.

You may be able to study a TAE fee-free full qualification if you are:
- 15 years old or over
- no longer at school
- living or working in NSW
- an Australian citizen, permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen.
Under Skills NSW, eligibility for fee-free training includes all people enrolling in a TAE full qualification, regardless of age or employment status.

Interested in short courses?
You can start with a short course (or part qualification) offering new skill sets and a license to fast track your career. Short courses are on nationally accredited subjects and are offered at TAFE NSW, community and private colleges. They can be used as a starting point to complete a full qualification at a later stage.
