Sydney Secondary College community consultation

The department is consulting with students, parents, staff and key stakeholders in Term 2 2025 regarding enhancing educational offerings at Sydney Secondary College Balmain, Leichhardt and Blackwattle Bay campuses.

The consultation process will provide valuable insights into community preferences, ensuring enhanced opportunities align with the needs of students, including curriculum options, facilities needs and sporting opportunities.

Consultation began on Wednesday 4 June 2025 and finish Friday 4 July 2025.

We welcome feedback via an online survey from students, families, staff, the community and special interest groups.

Frequently asked questions

The department is consulting with the Inner West community to identify opportunities for enhancing educational offerings, including curriculum options, facilities needs and extracurricular opportunities, at Sydney Secondary College Leichhardt, Balmain and Blackwattle Bay campuses.

The consultation process will involve a detailed online survey.

As we are not proposing substantial changes to campus operations or asking the community to have its say on a range of complex proposals, a survey has been selected as the most appropriate consultation method.

For this consultation, the department is seeking feedback on several potential changes to the college’s educational offerings.

We will encourage participation through an online survey with current and future students, teachers and staff, primary and high school parents and carers, the public and special interest groups.

The school community of Sydney Secondary College Leichhardt, Balmain and Blackwattle Bay campuses will be invited to take part in the consultation, in addition to communities from the following schools across the Inner West area:

  • Annandale North Public School

  • Annandale Public School

  • Balmain Public School

  • Birchgrove Public School

  • Dobroyd Point Public School

  • Drummoyne Public School

  • Forest Lodge Public School

  • Glebe Public School

  • Haberfield Public School

  • Kegworth Public School

  • Leichhardt Public School

  • Newtown North Public School

  • Nicholson Street Public School

  • Orange Grove Public School

  • Petersham Public School

  • Rozelle Public School

  • Russell Lea Public School

  • Stanmore Public School

  • Taverners Hill Infants School

  • Ultimo Public School.

At the end of the consultation process, a report outlining the findings will be prepared by the department. Information will be shared with school communities by the end of 2025.

No decisions about future school plans have been made. Community consultation will inform any decision making about Sydney Secondary College campuses. All feedback will be reviewed and considered before any proposals or recommendations are made.

Our detailed analysis of current and future enrolment trends, and other detailed demographic data, show that there is currently sufficient capacity to accommodate student numbers at existing high schools across the Inner West.

This consultation aims to gauge the community’s preferences for enhanced opportunities at Sydney Secondary College Balmain, Leichhardt and Blackwattle Bay campuses.

The department continues to explore future options as part of planning for the area.

Principals and staff will be asked to complete the relevant survey and will be provided a communications pack with information to share with their school community.

Principals and staff will be asked to encourage their school community – including students, parents and carers - to have their say through the consultation process.

The implementation process will be communicated with staff once recommendations have been decided.
