Why do we have to do NAPLAN?

Jenny Donovan

Well, you only have to do it in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. So it’s only every two years in the middle of your schooling and it’s a really important tool for your teachers because it helps to make sure that they know how well you’re going in areas of literacy and numeracy. Cause if you weren’t doing well in literacy and numeracy you’d find it very hard to do all of the other subjects that you need to do throughout your schooling.

Why is it better to do NAPLAN online?

Jenny Donovan

Well, the first reason is, it’s more fun for you because, as a student, you like working on laptops and iPads and things like that more, don’t you? The other reason, for the teachers, is when NAPLAN’s online, all of the answers you give get captured onto the machine and it means we can send the reports back to the teachers about how well you did. What did you answer correctly and what did you get wrong? So that they can use that information when they’re teaching you in the classroom.

Isn’t it bad to waste time on tests when we could be learning?

Jenny Donovan

That’s a really good question. I don’t think doing tests is a waste of time because it’s a way that teachers can understand that you are learning. They can watch what you’re doing in the classroom and look at the work that you do in your books, but NAPLAN gives us an opportunity every couple of years for teachers to just make sure the judgements they’re making about your learning are consistent with judgements that teachers are making in classrooms everywhere.

What will our teachers do with our results?

Jenny Donovan

Well, when the results come back to them, they’ll look at them really closely because they’ll use those results to decide are there any things they need to be teaching you that they haven’t already taught you or that you might not have understood very well. All of your teachers would know how you’re going in your learning really well because that’s what teachers do. But NAPLAN gives them an opportunity to just do a double check that what they’re seeing in the classroom is the same as what you’re showing on the tests. And if there are any differences then they’ll come and talk to you about it and they’ll talk to you about what you’re going to be learning next to make sure that you’ve got all of the knowledge that you need, that will help you succeed in your learning in all of your schooling.

Don’t you think tests like NAPLAN cause too much stress for kids?

Jenny Donovan

Tests like NAPLAN shouldn’t be stressful events. You should feel like you’re ready to do NAPLAN and you know what’s going to be happening on the days when the tests are being sat. The teachers will have told you all about it and they will have told you not to be too worried about it. There’s nothing bad going to happen because of NAPLAN. The only thing that’s going to happen is good! Your teachers will know exactly what they need to be teaching you more about, to make sure that you’ll be a successful learner as you go through your schooling.

How do we deal with anxious feelings about NAPLAN?

Jenny Donovan

Good question. I think there are two things that you need to keep in your head. One is that you should tell your teachers if you’re feeling anxious you should say “I’m really worried about this.” Because your teachers know you and they understand how you feel and they’ll help calm you down and relax you. But the other thing to keep in your head is NAPLAN is not a high-stakes test. You’re not going to get into trouble, so there’s no reason for you to feel anxious. But if you do, remember, actually it’s all being done because it’s going to help you and tell your teachers. And they’ll say “Calm down, there’s nothing to worry about here. We’ve practised. We know how to do this. You’ve got this!”
