Game Changer Challenge 2020

Clare White

We are so excited to be able to put this video together for you, and we're going to take you through some cool Microsoft stuff today. So Lawrence, what are you going to show us today?

Lawrence Crumpton

I think we should jump into the session. I'll be wearing this. So this is a Hololens. It's a computer. So there are no cables of wires. The whole device is a computer. And as you can see here, it's got a see through screen. So when I am wearing this device, I can see, not only you, or in this case, my laptop, I can see the room. I can see other people in the room and I can see the holograms themselves. So I am going to go to the application. I know it looks like I'm just touching air but I'm actually going to the application, Altoura and I will see you in a second.

Clare White

Awesome, see you there Lawrence. Hello again, Lawrence.

Lawrence Crumpton

Oh, hello.

Clare White

So you are now, I guess a hologram in my study.

Lawrence Crumpton

That is so cool. I wish I could actually see your study, but yeah, it's really cool that we can kind of be face-to-face. By the way, you're here with me in glorious, beautiful New South Wales, North New South Wales. So, yeah

Clare White

And I think you'd be glad that you can't see my study 'cause it's a mess and we are all working from home at the moment due to COVID. So we're working from all kinds of places and it's really super cool that we can use this technology to actually feel like we're there in person.

Lawrence Crumpton

And you know what? One of the things that I'm loving is, because I'm wearing the actual headset, for me it really does feel like you're here. So right now we're talking about what it might be like for some of the students, the Game Changers who are watching this video, what it might be like when they study in university and when they go to work. But, but to be honest, there are a lot of people doing this today, every day. So down in Tasmania, there's a group called All Brick, and all of their craftsmen, all of their brick layers. They use HoloLens to look at the design of the walls that they are building. And they work together, each person in a headset, putting brick to brick inside the wall, and it cuts down on the amount of time. They don't have as many questions on where things go, and if they do have a question, they can get help in real time from people who are in the room with them, or people who are anywhere else in the world with them. So that's really a capability that you can do today. So it's not a future thing. It's a today thing.

Clare White

Awesome. So where are we now, Lawrence?

Lawrence Crumpton

This is a virtual residence and you can see that it's been created in mixed reality. And, I can basically walk with you around and give you a tour. You can check out all the amenities, but I guess more to the point, why we've done this, a long time ago, if I wanted to plan with you and what your house would look like, or maybe the furnishings and decorations in your house, I would have to do all of that using a tablet or on a PC screen. But here, we're inside of it. And I think that's a little bit hard to kind of convey over the video, that for me, I'm walking around inside of this virtual house with you, even though we're not in the same place.

Clare White

So cool. I love this house too. I like the artwork.

Lawrence Crumpton

Did you know, it's a real house in Seattle?

Clare White

No way. That's so cool. Awesome, so this has got all kinds of applications, hasn't it? Certainly within the building industry and construction and any other applications you see this?

Lawrence Crumpton

Oh, absolutely. So engineers are using this very same technology to work with the rovers on the surface of Mars. So instead of sitting in their desk, trying to interpret spreadsheets on a computer, they can stand on the surface of Mars with the footage that have been captured by their rovers. And they can understand, just like if they were being there.

Clare White

Hey Lawrence, hi again.

Lawrence Crumpton

Hey, good to see you kind of back in the real world.

Clare White

I know, well that was so fun hosting you in my study. Thank you for that. That was super fun.

Lawrence Crumpton

I'm glad you enjoyed it. And I think if we ever do another one of these, we'll do it on the surface of Mars.

Clare White

Totally. And look, I think we both want to just wish all of the New South Wales Department of Ed 2020 GameChangers all the best with the challenge. Keep coming up with awesome ideas. Anything else you want to say, Lawrence, in closing?

Lawrence Crumpton

I was gonna say, thanks for inviting us to talk a little bit about what we're doing and giving you a little glimpse of how you'll study when you get to university and how you'll apply your skills when you get to work out in the the corporate world when you graduate. So with that, I would say good luck.

Clare White

Awesome. Thank you. Thanks for joining us today. Bye guys.
