What is the Cool Controller Competition?

The Cool Controller Competition aims to encourage and support Stage 3 and Stage 4 students to use a design thinking approach to develop an improved ‘Smart’ control unit for the Cooler Classroom air conditioning and fresh air ventilation units.

A 'Smart' control (device) uses sensors and connections to other devices, via the internet, to make a task more efficient.

The newly developed 'Smart' controller will make changes in the classroom to optimise air quality, thermal comfort and energy usage.

Students will develop this 'Smart' controller through a guided teaching and learning process. Resources have been created to specifically support and guide teachers and students through a step by step process.

At the end of the process, students will be able to present a conceptual prototype of their innovative design solution.

As a result, classrooms will take on a sustainable approach with an improvement to thermal comfort and indoor air quality.

Who is the competition for?

Stage 3 and Stage 4 students.

What are the prizes?

Each finalist team will receive a micro:bit ‘Lab Pack’ that can be used in the classroom for STEM activities.

Are there prizes for teachers too?

The first 100 DoE teachers to register received a free PD Masterclass in Designing for Sustainability. Unfortunately all these places have now been filled.

What will the finals event look like?

Finalists will have the opportunity to present their designs at an awards presentation event on 15 October. The format of the event is yet to be determined. Details will be advised closer to the date.
