Agriculture, forestry and fishing has the highest level of self employment in any industry, one in two workers. This means they either have their own business or are contractors. The industry has become more varied in terms of products and roles. Jobs in this industry can often mean working long hours and sometimes on the weekends.
Agriculture has always been one of Australia’s major industries, both domestically and exporting to other countries. Forestry workers grow, prune, take care of and harvest trees. Fishery officers monitor and study all aspects of the fishing industry and also enforce fishing laws. Fisheries officers usually work for local or state government.
