Adverbs

Adverbs are words that tell us more about verbs.

Adverbs can tell us about:

Manner (how) Place (where) Time (when) Degree (to what extent) Frequency (how often)
fast, quickly, hungrily, excitedly near, far, here, there, up, down immediately, then, soon, tomorrow quite, nearly, hardly, extremely frequently, occasionally, often
Lucy did the work carefully. The family live
locally.
James did it
yesterday.
I could hardly
speak.
She occasionally visits the museum.

A comparative adverb provides degrees of comparison.

Jake didn’t earn much.
more
Hugh earned more.
the most
Adam earned the most.
little
Lucy did little work.
less
Mary did less work.
the least
Emma did the least work.
fast
The sedan went fast.
faster
The truck went faster.
the fastest

Sophie rode carefully.
more carefully
Sonia rode more carefully.

Sally rode the most carefully.
