Bump It Up – at a glance

The Bump It Up strategy identifies schools that have the greatest capacity to improve students' performance in literacy and numeracy.

The NSW Department of Education has developed a range of key initiatives to support school leaders to strengthen practice in schools and enhance literacy and numeracy learning outcomes for all students. Bump It Up is one of a range of initiatives aligned with the Literacy and Numeracy Strategy 2017-20 to ensure all NSW students have the essential literacy and numeracy skills they need for success in learning and in life.

Bump It Up provides targeted support for schools to strengthen existing practice so that students with the greatest capacity can improve further.

  • November 2017 – Adobe Professional Learning sessions launched.
  • 2 August 2017 – The department released preliminary NAPLAN results.
  • 3-4 April 2017 – High Expectations for All Learners conference held at Novotel Brighton Beach, Sydney.

The department initiated the Bump It Up strategy in 137 NSW Government schools in 2016 to increase the number of students achieving in the top 2 NAPLAN performance bands. The Bump It Up strategy now forms part of the Literacy and Numeracy Strategy, focusing on explicit teaching and diagnostic assessment.

All schools were required to update their school plans by the end of Term 1 2017, explicitly addressing the Premier’s Priority for improving education results.

Principals of Bump It Up schools were advised in November 2016 to incorporate their reading and numeracy plans into their current strategic directions. Principals should record the key Bump It Up reading strategy and numeracy strategy as separate explicit processes within the relevant strategic direction for both reading comprehension and numeracy initiatives.

The NSW Department of Education has procured ACER Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT) PAT-R Comprehension and PAT-Maths as a standardised assessment tool for use by Bump It Up schools in 2017 free of charge. These tools are already used by many NSW schools and provide an accessible online tool to Australian schools.

Bump It Up schools may choose to administer the PAT to students in Terms 1 and 3 this year  as one of the measures used to evaluate the planned reading and numeracy initiatives outlined in their school plans.

Once per term, principals will provide an update on the progress of their targeted literacy and numeracy initiatives to directors, Public Schools NSW, using the Improvement Progress (milestones) page.

The preliminary NAPLAN results have indicated that the The Bump it Up schools have been very successful. Those schools as a group achieved greater improvements in results for students in the top 2 bands for reading and numeracy than other schools.
