Student leaders from across the Cowpasture Principal Network came together for a day of collaboration, creativity and confidence-building

Hosted by St Johns Park High School, the 2026 Leadership by the Cowpasture conference welcomed student leaders from 14 primary schools and six secondary schools on the first day of the two-part program to explore leadership through the social-emotional domain of High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE).

The event was officially opened by Relieving Director Educational Leadership, Kim Smith, who encouraged students to embrace leadership opportunities and support one another as they develop their skills.

Throughout the day, students took part in a series of interactive activities designed to help them better understand what leadership looks like in their own communities. Working in teams, they identified community needs, developed action plans and practised pitching their ideas to key stakeholders.

The conference was held at Club Marconi, whose support helped create a welcoming environment for students and teachers. Student mentors from six high schools across the Cowpasture network also played a key role, guiding and encouraging younger participants throughout the program.

The collaborative environment gave students the opportunity to build important social-emotional skills including self-awareness, empathy, teamwork and communication.

Guest speaker, Executive Director for Metropolitan South and West, Kay Rigas, inspired students by sharing insights from her own leadership journey and encouraging them to pursue their goals with confidence.

Teachers praised the organisation of the event and the way the activities empowered students to contribute their ideas and work together.

“It was a great opportunity for students to engage with other schools, be out of their comfort zone and meet new students,” one teacher said. “Seeing them have student voice in action, collaborating and empowering young leaders.”

Students echoed the positive feedback.

“I loved how we got to meet different people and learn what leadership really means,” one student said.

High school mentors also valued the chance to support younger students.

“I really enjoyed mentoring new people and building connections,” one mentor said. “The guest speaker was very inspiring.”

The event was coordinated by the team at St Johns Park High School, including Principal Steve Moisidis, Relieving Principal Nicole Sullivan, and teachers Angela Waesch and Julie Le.

The school said the program reflects its ongoing commitment to nurturing the whole student and empowering young people to become confident, empathetic and purposeful leaders in their communities.
