We Will Rock You’ they promised, and rock they did. Months of rehearsals came to fruition as Winmalee High School stunned audiences across two weeks of performances of the jukebox musical We Will Rock You.
A special matinee performance saw students from Ellison Public School and residents from local residential aged care facilities clapping along to Queen’s classic hits, all amazed by the talent on display.
Year 12 student Tahlia McGown stars as ‘Scaramouche’, belting out Queen classics from Bohemian Rhapsody to Somebody To Love in her third musical at Winmalee High, though this is her first leading role.
“It’s very exciting, and really different to every other musical I’ve done – I’ve never done a rock show before,” she said.
Ellison Public School students were captivated throughout the show, clapping and enthusiastically singing along to We Are The Champions.
Winmalee High School has a solid reputation of putting on professional-level school musicals every two years.
“Over the years we’ve developed a production team full of staff from across the school, with about 20 staff members contributing to making these shows happen,” Head Teacher of Creative and Performing Arts and Director of the production, Madeleine Sheeh, said.
“All the pieces of the puzzle came together for this production. From incredibly talented singers, dancers and actors to an excellent band/orchestra and production crew. I am so proud of them all and thrilled with how truly amazing the show is,” she said.
Deputy Principal, Craig McGown said school productions, like We Will Rock You, were key parts of the school experience for all students who partake.
“It’s a highlight for our students, and to see past students continually come back to see each production is proof of how important these shows are to them during their time at school,” Mr McGown said.
“It’s really special to see the entire community show so much support, and it’s been fantastic to see how much they love We Will Rock You.”

For Bruce, an 86-year-old music lover, listening to gifted students belting out Queen classics made for an excellent excursion.
“It’s always good to get out and about, but it’s been particularly special listening to the talented local students. It has made for a very enjoyable day,” Bruce said.
“I was very surprised at their singing and how much work has been put into this show. We were all very impressed,” he said.
Following cheers from the audience, the show’s cast were met with compliments galore, with handshakes and congratulations in spades for the show they put on.
