Students from Blacktown Boys and Mitchell High School recently marked National Careers Week by immersing themselves in a cutting-edge Cyber Security initiative.
The day was a dynamic blend of expert insights and hands-on challenges, designed to ignite interest in the burgeoning field of cyber security.
The event kicked off with an inspiring panel discussion featuring industry leaders including NSW Department of Education’s Chief Information Officer Charlie Sukkar and Manager, Fraud and Corruption Albert Gardner; and Thales Vice President, Jacqui Kernot.
Their real-world perspectives and career pathways illuminated the critical importance and exciting possibilities within cybersecurity.
A student said: "Technical ability does not necessarily lead into a career in cyber security. There is an integral social component."
Another student said: "There are different type of security roles, and you don't need technical experience to get into the career."

Following this, the students discussed cyber security case studies, culminating in an exciting ‘Capture the Flag’ competition. This challenge put their coding, hacking, collaborating, communicating and problem-solving skills to the test as they raced to uncover hidden digital flags within a simulated environment.
"Cyber security is a journey of constant and new learning,” a student said.
The students successfully completed a nationally recognised TAFE Micro Skill, ‘Introduction to Cyber Security', a valuable addition to their resumes and a significant stride along potential STEM pathways.
The success of this event was made possible by the coordinated efforts of the Cyber Security Education and Awareness and the Education Pathways Program teams in collaboration with industry partners including CyberCX, the Australian Department of Home Affairs, KIK Innovation, ID Support NSW, Cyber Security NSW, and Thales.
Building on this success, the Cyber Security team is committed to extending this career-focused learning to regional areas, with upcoming events planned for Armidale High School, Murrumbidgee High School, and schools in the Newcastle area, ensuring that more young people can explore the exciting world of cyber security.
