For the first time, the NSW Department of Education will enter a team in the iconic City2Surf this Sunday 9 August.

The department team’s participation coincides with Public Education Week, making it a perfect opportunity to put public education in NSW front and centre at the world’s largest fun run.

More than 130 staff, students and alumni will take on the 14-kilometre course, from Sydney’s city centre to Bondi Beach, showcasing the department’s commitment to health and wellbeing through the ‘Inspiring Excellence’ theme that drives public education across NSW.

Wearing ‘Inspiring Excellence’ t-shirts and singlets, the team will comprise more than 100 teaching and support staff, along with nearly 30 students and NSW public school alumni.

They will join 20,000 other runners who have already helped raise more than $2.8 million for 700 charities.

City2Surf brings together runners, walkers and families for an unbeatable atmosphere, with entertainment, dress-ups and ‘Sydney’s biggest dance party’ along the route.

Teacher and team coach Kyle Sutton, Vice President of the NSW Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, said the department’s participation in the 2026 event highlighted its commitment to health, physical education and the HPGE Inspire framework, promoting wellbeing, resilience and active living in public schools.

“This marks the first time we’ve come together under the Inspiring Excellence banner to take part in City2Surf,” Mr Sutton said.

“It’s a wonderful way to bring Public Education Week to a close by embracing health, resilience and community.

“Whether you’re running, walking or cheering, being part of this team is about more than the finish line - it’s about inspiring each other every step of the way.”

Woodberry Public School teacher Jodie Petersen will run with her husband and daughter on Sunday.

“Running alongside fellow teachers, students and staff shows the strong community spirit within public education, and it’s motivating to be part of such a supportive team,” she said.

“Doing the run at the end of Public Education Week feels especially meaningful - it’s a great moment to celebrate the incredible dedication and passion of everyone involved in public schools.”

Participants are invited to Bondi Beach Public School at the finish line of Sunday’s event for a barbecue and family-friendly activities.
