Nominations open for 20th Nanga Mai Awards

The 20th Nanga Mai Awards will celebrate and recognise excellence and educational achievements in Aboriginal education.

Nominations for the 20th annual Nanga Mai Awrds are now open.

The Nanga Mai Awards acknowledge and celebrate outstanding achievements in Aboriginal education across NSW public schools.

Executive Director, Aboriginal Education and Communities, Michele Hall, said it was a milestone year for the awards.

“It is a very proud moment to be celebrating the 20th year of the Nanga Mai Awards. Over the past two decades these awards have recognised our talented students, staff, schools and Aboriginal community members,” she said.

NSW Department of Education Secretary Murat Dizdar said the awards recognised achievement through the full spectrum of public education in NSW.

“From incredible early childhood educators, extraordinary school achievers, outstanding staff and remarkable community contributors, our Nanga Mai Award winners and nominees are truly inspirational,” he said.

Nanga Mai Award nominees can include:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students

  • Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal teachers

  • NSW Department of Education staff (school-based and non-school-based)

  • NSW public schools

  • Aboriginal community members

Nominations for the 20th Nanga Mai Awards can be submitted online until Friday 4 July.

The 2025 award recipients will be recognised at a gala ceremony at the department’s Parramatta office on Thursday 25 September.
