Three public school science students have scored medals at the 2025 International Science Olympiads.

Jeffrey Tang, from North Sydney Boys High School, won a Silver medal at the 2025 International Earth Science Olympiad, held in China.

Daniel Lin and Gina Chen, both from James Ruse Agricultural High School, secured bronze medals; Daniel at the 2025 International Chemistry Olympiad, held in UAE and Gina at the 2025 International Biology Olympiad, held in Philippines.

They were among a team of 17 science students selected to represent Australia, after tough qualifying exams and training. The team returned home with an impressive tally of 4 gold, 7 silver, and 6 bronze medals.

Jeffrey won the silver for the Individual test at the International Earth Science Olympiad and also won two team bronze medals for an Earth Systems Project and an International Team Field Investigation.

For Jeffrey, having the opportunity to see geological phenomena in person, handle specimens, and connect the theoretical with the practical side of Earth science was the highlight of Australian Science Olympiad (ASO) Summer School.

He loved engaging with subject experts through guest lectures and immersing himself in the world of Earth science.

Jeffrey has a passion for astronomy, having been captivated since a young age by astronomers like Brian Cox.

Daniel loves chemistry because it allows him to see and understand the world around him better, from industrial processes to pretty crystals, chemistry has it all.

The hands-on labs were Daniel’s favourite part of ASO Summer School. Having the opportunity to work with specialised lab equipment – and make a mess along the way – has him hooked on chemistry.

Gina has been involved with Big Science Competition and Junior Science Olympiad Exams through her school, before undertaking ASO Exams. She is an ASO Summer School veteran, having attended the 2023 and 2024 Earth and Environmental Science Summer Schools before taking part in Biology this year.

Gina says she has been very lucky to have had amazing science teachers who initially pushed her towards the Olympiads. She has a passion for gender equality in STEM and is fascinated by how biology affects the social climate we live in.

“All our teams have achieved exceptional results. It’s a reflection of their grit and determination, and a testament to the quality programs delivered by teams who consistently go above and beyond for these students,” Associate Professor Stella Clark, Chair of the Board, said.

“We are immensely proud of their achievements and excited to share their outstanding results and inspiring moments.”
