Construction has begun on a major upgrade for Schofields Public School in Sydney’s growing North West, as part of the Minns Labor Government’s work to deliver world-class permanent facilities for schools that had their playgrounds overrun by demountables during a decade of neglect under the Liberals.
With nearly half of the school’s students currently in demountables, the upgrade will include a new three-storey building with 24 high-quality permanent classrooms, plus new staff and student amenities.
The new building will open mid-next year, making way for demountables to be removed and freeing up significant play space for students at Schofields Public School.
Schofields is part of Sydney’s North West Growth Area, which recorded the fastest student population growth in the 2024 Enrolment Growth Audit, while recent Census data shows the overall population more than tripled between 2016 and 2021.
This project complements a raft of new and upgraded schools already delivered or on the way that are adding almost 600 new permanent classrooms across Sydney’s North West, including:
- Melonba Public School
- Melonba High School
- Tallawong Public School
- Nirimba Fields Public School
- Box Hill Public School
- Box Hill High School
- Gables Public School
- New high school for Schofields and Tallawong
- Rouse Hill High School (upgrade)
- Castle Hill Public School (upgrade)
- Matthew Pearce Public School (upgrade)
- Excelsior Public School (upgrade)
- Glenwood High School (upgrade)

This work is part of the Minns Labor Government’s plan to rebuild public education, with a record school infrastructure budget including $3.6 billion for new and upgraded schools across Western Sydney.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said:
“The Minns Labor Government is committed to ensuring public school students in Sydney’s high-growth suburbs have access to world class learning facilities, after too many communities were ignored under the Liberals.
“As part of our plan to rebuild public education in NSW, we are delivering major upgrades to get students and teachers into permanent classrooms and removing demountables so schools can get their playgrounds back.
“These new facilities will ensure students at Schofields Public School have a modern learning environment that will help them thrive at school.”
Member for Riverstone Warren Kirby said:
“I am extremely proud the NSW Government is helping to deliver upgraded facilities where they are needed most.
“Sydney’s North West is growing at a rapid rate, and these new facilities will future-proof Schofields Public School and give peace of mind to our local families that their children will always have a place at a world-class public school close to home.
“I’m thrilled to see this project forging ahead after campaigning alongside the community for action, and I look forward to seeing the finished product that will benefit families in our community for generations to come.”
Schofields Public School Principal Cathy Thoroughgood said:
“Our entire school community is beyond excited that construction is starting on this important upgrade.
“These new facilities will provide a modern learning environment that will help our students reach their full potential now and into the future.
“We look forward to seeing construction take shape and to make the most of our new facilities once opened next year.”
