Students, teachers, and community members, 1200 of them, from across Lake Macquarie West came together in National Reconciliation Week for a Reconciliation Walk at the Rathmines foreshore.

The event was attended by Members of Parliament, Aboriginal Elders, Aboriginal Education Consultative Group members and students from preschools, primary, and high schools.

The Principal of Toronto Public School, Adam Lewis, said it served as a powerful demonstration of respect for the Awabakal and Worimi peoples and of commitment to reconciliation.

“The walk brought together schools and community members in a show of unity, honouring the rich cultural heritage of the Awabakal and Worimi peoples and recognising their enduring connection to the land,” Mr Lewis said.

“It’s about acknowledging the past, strengthening relationships, and working towards a future built on respect, understanding, and shared learning.”

Following the walk a ceremony featured performances and reflections from local Elders, school leaders, and special guests.
