Seventy-five Gosford High School students, from Years 8 to 12 formed the cast, crew and orchestra who rehearsed over seven months before staging four dazzling performances of Disney’s musical, Beauty and the Beast.

A live orchestra, made up entirely of Gosford High School students, performed under musical director Mr Kelly, while a student technical crew managed the production behind the scenes, including painting the sets and costumes alongside teachers and parents.

Director Ms Gatland said watching the students grow as performers and as a team had made the production one of the highlights of her career.

“Directing this show has been one of the highlights of my career,” Ms Gatland said.

“It has been so amazing to watch them all grow as performers but also as a family.

“The fantastic crew were honestly the greatest crew I have ever had for a production. Their quick changes and problem-solving backstage has been unprecedented, dealing with every crisis and disaster with a cool head and professionalism beyond their years.

“This experience has been nothing short of a joy, and I am genuinely so sad it’s over.”

Vocal coach Ms Schirmer supported the cast, while the school also welcomed back alumni Tayla and Riley as choreographer and assistant choreographer.

For many students, the production provided their first opportunity to experience musical theatre and develop skills both on and off the stage.

Year 11 student Minsoo, who played Cogsworth, described the production as “without a doubt the best time of my life”.

“Every single part of the process, like rehearsals, making friends and performing was always incredibly fun,” Minsoo said.

Year 8 student Zoe, who played a seamstress, said the musical introduced her to the world of drama and acting.

“Being part of the production of Beauty and the Beast allowed me to create new friendships and experience the world of drama,” Zoe said.

“For me, it was my first involvement in a drama and acting role, and it was really fun and eye-opening.”

Year 10 student Chiara said working with the hair and makeup team also provided opportunities to learn new skills.

“Not only did I have an amazing time, I also had the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people,” Chiara said.

The experience extended well beyond the stage, with students describing the friendships and sense of community created through the production as among its biggest highlights.

Year 10 ensemble member David said students across the cast, crew and orchestra had worked together to create an unforgettable experience.

“I met people I never would’ve connected with if not for the musical, so I will always be grateful,” David said.

“I really enjoyed my time in the musical and am thankful for all the memories.”

The four performances were warmly received by the school community and celebrated the creativity, resilience and professionalism of the students involved.

The production demonstrated what can be achieved when students are given opportunities to collaborate, develop new skills and showcase their talents.
