Cobbitty Public School’s breakfast club began last year with teachers running the program one day a week, but rapid popularity led to a new recipe for success: student leadership.

With support from Foodbank, ‘Cobbitty Breakfast Bites’ now operates every Monday, Thursday and Friday, providing cereal, toast and camaraderie to around three-quarters of the school's students each day it runs.

The club's secret ingredient? Students in Kindergarten to Year 6 who are identified as High Potential and Gifted (HPGE) in the social and emotional domains are at its helm.

They organise rosters, set up and serve breakfast, and consult with their peers to find out what improvements can be made. The next step will see students apply maths skills to track supplies and manage orders.

Cobbitty Public School Principal Nicole George said the breakfast club had evolved into a wonderful example of student voice in action.

"Students are taking ownership by helping to plan, organise and run the program, while developing their leadership, teamwork and communication skills," Ms George said.

"It has been fantastic to see our high potential students in the social and emotional domain thrive in authentic leadership roles while creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for others.

"It is also great to see the students interacting with each other in a positive way before they begin their day.

“We have a 5-star check-in that students complete every day when they enter the classroom. On the days we run Cobbitty Breakfast Bites, there’s a significant increase in the number of students checking in as 5 stars and ready to learn,” she said.

Breakfast Club Coordinator Ella Jordan said the program gave students agency and responsibility.

"Breakfast Club fosters a strong sense of teamwork and community and ensures students are nourished and ready to learn each day," Ms Jordan said.

"Students have agency by being actively involved in shaping how the Breakfast Club runs … giving them the opportunity to strengthen their leadership skills through collaboration and responsibility."

Cobbitty Breakfast Bites isn't just for students. Parents are also welcome, and on Fridays they are invited to join 'Cobbitty Cosy Reads' - enjoying breakfast together before heading into the library for a group reading session.

For the students, the club is about more than food.

"I love to serve people breakfast because they always use their manners. I also like it when we get to eat after," said Year 2 student, Ivy said.

"I like helping because it is fun and I feel like I am doing something good for our school community," Year 6 student, Tahlia added.

"I love eating breakfast at school because I eat with my friends and there is toast there, oh and sometimes I have Weetabix too," Kindergarten student Adelyn said.

With its students in charge, Cobbitty Breakfast Bites is proving that a good breakfast is the perfect recipe for both learning and leadership.
