Students from Wee Waa High have enjoyed a cultural experience to remember, travelling to Sydney to meet with 2025 Archibald Prize-winning artist and school alumnus Julie Fragar.

Relieving Principal Nichole Maloy said the two-day trip was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Art Gallery of NSW, which covered travel and accommodation costs for the students.

After travelling to Sydney by bus, students enjoyed a live NRL game, before a tour of the gallery and this year’s Archibald exhibition.

The 13 students were then introduced to Ms Fragar – a former Wee Waa High student – as well as fellow artist, and the subject of the 2025 Archibald award-winning portrait, Justene Williams.

Students participated in a Q and A session with Ms Fragar and Ms Williams, gaining insights into their artistic journeys, creative processes, and the importance of regional representation in the arts.

Students also participated in a self-portraiture workshop led by gallery educators.

“Opportunities like this show the power of arts education and the importance of supporting creative pathways for young people in rural communities,” Ms Maloy said.

“It was an unforgettable experience for our students and a glimpse into the world of professional art, guided by one of their own.”
