Maitland Grossmann High School students were among the talented performers who took to the stage at Maitland Regional Art Gallery as part of Youth Week celebrations in the Hunter.

But it was a performance by two newly arrived Afghan sisters who attend Maitland Grossmann that captivated the crowd.

Singing publicly in their native language of Dari (the Afghan dialect of Farsi, or Persian) for the first time since settling Australia, Zuhal and Weeda’s singing deeply moved the audience, leaving many stunned by their talent.

The school’s Head Teacher Creative and Performing Arts, Richard Focic, said he was full of admiration and respect for the school’s students and staff following their heartfelt participation in the event.

“Our Creative and Performing Arts students truly were shining stars on the night, captivating the audience with the power of youth expression,” Mr Focic said.

“The breathtaking performance of Zuhal and Weeda was a true highlight of the evening, not just as their teacher but also as part of the Maitland community that has welcomed them and their family.”

As well as dynamic music performances, the evening also featured visual art installations created by Maitland Grossmann High School students, a variety of food stalls and an enthusiastic crowd of families, friends, students, and locals.

Youth Week is an annual statewide celebration that recognises the contributions young people make to our communities.
