Eight-year-old Aylah Redshaw had no hesitation in going to a friend’s aid when he fell into a dam on a property owned by friends of her family.
Aylah had taken part in Argenton Public School’s Swim School lessons, something that may well have saved a life.
Aylah, and 5-year-old Mason, were out on motorbikes when they came to the dam, where they had previously skimmed stones.
Mason tried the rope swing, but fell off, landing in the middle of the dam, unable to swim, and in his heavy motorcycle gear apart from his boots.
Aylah, also in her gear but without boots, immediately swam out, but had to physically turn him on his back because he was panicking, floating on her back and kicking her legs to bring him safely to shore.
She said she had remembered the “sink or swim” message from her Swim School lessons.
Argenton Public School (on Awabakal land), Relieving Principal, Lindi Johnson said the whole school was so proud.
“We’re just amazed that she was able to stay calm and focussed,” Ms Johnson said.
“But when I say that I’m really not surprised at all.
“I’ve been Aylah’s teacher for the last three years and she’s a very applied student, very kinds and caring, and always will give everything a go.”
