Calling all career-changers and university students with a passion for maths.
Applications for teach.MathsNOW scholarships are now open for eligible STEM university students and industry professionals.
Australia’s best known maths teacher, Eddie Woo, said teachers had a huge impact on students’ self-concept of mathematics. “That reward is right there in front of you, every single day,” he said.
“A student, when they come to this realisation of what a concept means, that ‘I understand this’, that actually changes their self-concept. ‘I can understand this! I can be a mathematician!’
“And that changes them for the rest of their lives. There's nothing more satisfying than that. There's nothing bigger than that.”
Up to 80 scholarships will be available offering valuable financial and professional benefits, including a guaranteed permanent teaching position in a NSW public school.
The scholarships are open to industry professionals from career areas with a strong mathematical focus such as engineering, accounting, business, finance or information technology. STEM-focused university undergraduates, including those studying pure and applied mathematics, are also encouraged to apply.
The package includes up to $50,000 equivalent upfront course fees to support study of a mathematics teacher education qualification, a guarantee of permanent employment at the completion of study and professional enhancement through paid employment as a paraprofessional in the final three semesters of study.
Applications for the teach.MathsNOW scholarships close on 13 September. More information about the scholarships, including the online application, is available on the teach.nsw website.
Successful applicants will enter or continue an initial teacher education program from Semester 1 2020 at a recognised Australian university or tertiary institution to become a mathematics teacher. Studies are to be completed no later than the end of 2021.
