Revised Year 11 and 12 syllabuses
The last two years of high school should prepare students for the next phase of life. Whether it be academic study, vocational training or employment, strong literacy and numeracy skills are essential for future success.
The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) has updated the English and Mathematics syllabuses for Year 11 and 12. The new syllabuses are part of the Stronger HSC Standards, which are designed to motivate and challenge students to achieve their best.
What has changed?
All NSW syllabuses from Kindergarten to Year 12 now integrate the development of literacy and numeracy skills through general capabilities, cross-curriculum content or key competencies. The new syllabuses for Year 11 and 12 English and Mathematics are aligned to the minimum literacy and numeracy standard required for the HSC. The minimum standard is set a nationally agreed standard of functional literacy and numeracy skills.
NESA also provides literacy and numeracy support materials to teachers and students, including the Mathematics STEM Pathways for Year 9 and 10 students.
These Pathways provide teaching and learning resources linked to the minimum standard that can be delivered as a whole program linked to the Stage 5 syllabus, as an immersion, for small groups on identified issues or for students to work on in their own time.
