Most of our digital channels were developed over many years, often in an uncoordinated way. Each website is just one of many that our users interact with. When our websites look and behave differently, the journey becomes fragmented, things are harder to find and our users don't trust our content.
What is GEF?
GEF is a global experience framework. What this means for you is that the NSW Department of Education sections are going to look different from what they do now but they will be better. Information will be easier to find, and you'll enjoy a better user experience.
The GEF transformation is being rolled out through the department with a number of sections already live and others in transition. The GEF transformation includes embracing new technology, enhancing processes, improving website content and upskilling our people.
What are the best things about GEF?
There are many online improvements beginning with:
- GEF's new look and feel being rolled out across all our web presences using new patterns and design principles
- adopting Squiz Matrix (staff only) as the new CMS platform with improved search capabilities
- a new single domain URL: education.nsw.gov.au
- a decentralised content model, the great catalyst for a content spring clean
- specialist support
- training and workshops

Why the change?
Most of our websites were developed separately in an uncoordinated way. When websites look and act differently it makes them harder to use. Sometimes its hard to tell if you are on the right website, or if you can trust the information you've found.
We've been researching and listening to our users and they're dissatisfied. Both internal and external audiences have similar problems when trying to find department content online.
Our parents and schools staff complain of:
- too many websites – 'what site am I on?'
- duplicated content in multiple locations – 'is this the right information?'
- difficulty knowing which website to use – 'is this the right website?'
- minimal brand integrity – 'is this website legitimate?'
- confusing visuals and functionality – 'I don't know how to use this website'
- poor content quality – 'this information is out of date'
- usability and user experience issues – 'some things don't work as I expect them to'.
Our corporate staff complain of:
- different platforms – 'where should I publish my content?'
- state of flux – 'which is the supported platform?'
- long lead times on new elements for websites – 'why does everything take so long?'
- non-targeted content – 'I just need to communicate with teachers'
- confusing structure – 'I don't know where anything is'.
How are we changing?
We're putting our users' needs first and focusing on great digital content. We're doing research to understand our users – more than 84,000 staff and 764,000 students – and their needs. This research will help us to:
- transform old websites into new and improved sections under the one domain education.nsw.gov.au
- make our web content more consistent
- bring together separate pieces of information in a way that makes sense to users
- cut down on duplication and provide a single source of truth.
Focusing on our users means providing great content. It should be targeted, simply put, useful and accessible. This will also improve search results and information will be easier to find.
We're asking you to invest in your staff and empower them with the skills required to write great content. We're also asking you to take the user's view and consider their experience when creating content for them.
