Using photos for social media

Many services take photos of children engaged in learning activities and provide these to parents as a record of their child's development.

The Department of Education has recently published an updated Social Media Policy that includes a section (Permissions and Consent) specifically related to permissions for the use of photography on social media and advises staff to ensure they have collected this permission before publishing photos online.

Early childhood services are also required to collect permissions-to-publish annually from parents to ensure their records are up to date. The permission-to-publish form has been created with privacy policies in mind and is updated on a regular basis with the department's digital and legal teams to ensure it reflects the reality of the current digital age. Parents are free to decide if it is in their child's best interest to provide permission.

The risks associated with posting photos on social media should be carefully considered when providing an early childhood education service.

Providers should ensure that an appropriate policy and procedure is in place for the use of social media by educators. The department will also provide specific information and guidance to services on the appropriate use of photos of children.

In addition, the department has begun work to update social media resources which will be published in Term 1, 2017. The resources will include up to date information from the Federal Government's eSafety office on privacy and social media.
